What Does a Civil Engineer Do?
Take a look at the world around you. You may not realise it, but a lot of thought and expertise goes into every man-made thing that we take for granted in our environment.
Walter Gefrom is an established and experiences professional in the civil engineering field. Throughout his decades in civil engineering and the building industry, Gefrom has taken the helm of numerous endeavours through his roles as Project Manager and Designer. Today, he explains just what civil engineers do for young people looking to get into the field.
Civil engineers design, build, and supervise infrastructure projects and systems. These projects can range from bridges to airports to entire water supply and sewage systems. Everything about our modern way of living relies on civil engineering from roads to railways.
To become a civil engineer, you need to be creative, innovative, collaborative, and solution focused. If you are a high school student interested in the field, math and physics are important subjects. After high school, you’ll need to complete a degree in civil engineering. There are also many different specialities within civil engineering that you could focus on, such as transportation, structural engineering, or geotechnical engineering.
